Things to do
There is plenty to do in Mussoorie – spend your time sampling the variety of cuisines and crafts on offer in the stores, set off on a horse-ride or just admire the scenic vistas from strategically placed benches all along this hill-station.

“Going to the Mall’ as in other hill-stations established by the British in India is the standard thing to do in Mussoorie. The Mall, Mussoorie’s main promenade is vehicle-free during the peak tourist season and is filled with scores of visitors, young and old, families with kids in tow or couples on their honeymoon.

On the west side of the Mall in Mussoorie is the Library and to the east, isKulri Bazaar with souvenir shops, video game arcades and India’s largest indoor skating rink. Beyond Kulri is Landour, Mussoorie’s atmospheric old cantonment area with a few stores selling Raj memorabilia, silver jewellery and books. Get a feel of Tibetan life in Mussoorie in the Happy Valley, 3 km west of the Library, with its Tchechencholing gompa overlooking the Doon valley, a school and some shops selling Tibetan handicraft items. Quite a popular honeymoon destination, Mussoorie has plenty to offer to couples for even in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, honeymoon couples can build their cache of special memories.

No trip to Mussoorie is complete without a visit to Gun Hill, a curious flat-topped hill, the second highest peak of Mussoorie, so named because in colonial times, a gun placed on the summit used to fire at mid-day for locals to adjust their watches. Gun Hill can be reached on foot or on a pony by a bridle path from the Mall. Alternatively a 400 metre ropeway takes you up to the hilltop on a scintillating journey with great views. From the hilltop you get to see some of the more prominent peaks including Banderpunch, Srikanth, Pithwara and the Gangotri group.

For more scenic vistas, walk along the Camel’s Back road, named after a nearby rock formation, a 3-km road encircling the base of Gun Hill, particularly to view the breathtaking Himalayan sunset. View remnants of the Raj era architecture - Clouds End, the English chateau built in 1838 and one of the first buildings to come up in Mussoorie, 8 km from the Library; Childer’s Lodge, the highest point in the area, 5 km from the Tourist Office; the house where Sir George Everest, the first Surveyor General of India lived and worked, 8 km from the centre of town.

Trekkers will have plenty to trails to explore. From Mussoorie, short treks lead up to higher points with exalting views of mountain peaks towering well over 6,000 metres – to Nagtibba past Thatyur and Devalsari, (both with basic accommodation). Between Devalsari and Nagtibba, camps need to be set up. The trek back to Mussoorie is via Panthwari, Nainbagh and Kempty Falls. A 15 km trek from Mussoorie through Park Toll, Clouds End and Dudhli leads to the temple of Bhadraj with excellent views of the Doon valley, the Chakrata range and the Jaunsar Bawar region of the Garhwal Himalayas.

More difficult treks into the Har-ki-Dun valley also begin at Mussoorie. Literally, Valley of the Lord, this remote trail may be completed in three days, and is usually done from mid-April till mid-November. While accommodation is available lower down, in the higher reaches tents must be pitched for overnight halts.

Further Afield
Kempty Falls, 15 km is a must-do for tourists coming to Mussoorie. Other sites include Jharipani Falls, (8 km), Bhatta Falls (7 km) on the Mussoorie – Dehradun road and Mossey Falls (7 km) past Barlowganj. The recently developed Mussoorie Lake, 6 km down the Mussoorie-Dehradun road, has boating facilities. Visit the nearby ancient shrines – Nag Devta Temple (6 km) and the Jwalaji Temple on top of the Benog Hill.

25 km from Mussoorie down the road to Tehri is the tourist resort ofDhanaulti. Surrounded by fragrant pine and deodar forests, this secluded resort is the ideal retreat from the hustle-bustle of Mussoorie.

Getting to Mussoorie
Mussoorie is 34 kms from Dehradun, which is 250 km from Delhi (5 hours by road). The best way to get here is by car from Dehradun (30 to 45 minutes). The nearest rail station for Mussoorie is at Dehradun. There are regular buses and shared taxis from Dehradun, coming in to the Library Bus Stand.

Best time to visit Mussoorie
The peak tourist season is in summer from May till July. The tourist rush is also at this time so Mussoorie tends to get overcrowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, visit during October- November. Bring woolens, rain protection and walking shoes.

Accommodation in Mussoorie
Mussoorie has a wide range of accommodation, mostly along the Mall. Budget, standard class, and deluxe hotels abound. Rates fluctuate between peak tourist season and off-seasons. Some of the good hotels are theFortune Grace hotel near Library Bazaar which has a good location and thePark Plaza Sylverton which is located at the other end of the mall on the Picture palace side. If you want to be away from the Mall area, then try theAvalon Resort on Gun Hill and if luxury is what you are looking for then the deluxe Jaypee hotel would be a good choice.

How a 23 year old adventure seeker lives like a ROCK STAR and gets to meet lovely Thai women on a daily basis, when he’s not hitting the ocean or partying like there’s no tomorrow!

How a 41 year old guy accidently ‘discovered’ Thailand and its delicious food, amazing lifestyle and super friendly Thai women so much he COULDN’T leave!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Martin Hurley. I’ve never written a letter like this before. But what I just told you sums things up pretty well. And it all starts back in November 2003…

I had just flown in to the sprawling metropolis of Bangkok, Thailand. I was hot, disorientated — and starting to feel slightly desperate.

At first I thought it might have been something to do with my western style clothes. Or the way I looked. Whatever the case, it was definitely weird. Anyway – it was probably nothing… Or was it?

After three hours of sweating out every liquid that’s ever been poured into me for the last 3 months, confused and culture shocked, I gave up on trying to understand "Thai" and headed back to my hotel TV. And that’s when I noticed this weird thing happening all over again.

I thought perhaps there was just a small chance that maybe, just maybe, all these Thai folks had never seen a western guy before.

Or that I was just a white guy in Thailand, with only a Thai language guide book to keep me sane. But it happened everywhere I went.

Eventually, after hours of exploring I began to get a giddy and strange feeling that I was being watched. And let me tell you something. No matter what you look like, or where you come from, once you’re in Thailand, this weird thing will happen to you too.

Back in the safety of my hotel, I went down to talk to the hotel lobby girl. What happened next was eerie.

While we chatted, I felt as if she had sprinkled some sort of ‘love powder’ or something into my water. It was uncanny.

My whole body began to feel completely at ease, all the tension evaporating and every muscle in my body relaxing with every calming word that popped out her mouth!

It caught me right of my guard. To my astonishment, all the Thai girls in the lobby seemed to be rather keen to chat. In fact, they ALL seemed to have one amazing thing in common…

I was confused. You see, we Aussie’s are a friendly lot too, but this was something else… something that would bring a grown man to his knees!

So when I finally sat down, while chatting with these super friendly Thai girls, the thought occurred to me that there’d be a LOT of guys who’d do absolutely anything to be sitting here in my place.

And that’s the first lesson in this long and bizarre tale. In a nutshell – if you’re serious about meeting Thai women then…

Well I have travelled to over 38 different countries around the world, including Ukraine and to be quite honest with you, I don’t think I’ve seen so many beautiful women per square kilometre, than I have in Ukraine. I remember back in my NYU days there were several key mistakes novice directors made when it came to the actor-director relationship:

- Treating your actors like demigods. To this day I’ve never seen an actor lift a mountain or part a large body of water. If your actor sucks they should be fired, immediately, without an apology. Unless the actor’s name helps you raise money for a project, no single person in your cast or crew should be viewed as indispensable.

- Talked too much about what your project/script means rather than your material vision of the project. Maybe this is the most common mistake of directors. Directors love talking about themes and metaphors but actors can’t work with themes and metaphors. You’re not writing an English paper; you’re shooting a movie or producing play if you’re in theater. Actors need a very special kind of "actorspeak" that I’ve learned to develop over the years.

- Working with amateurs You are not rich. You are not famous. You cannot hrie a professional. WRONG! The honest to god truth is that anybody can hire professional actors. No one has to settle for casting their step-sister. The problem is approach. Hiring professionals requires certain procedures and etiquette. I’ll cover how you can better approach professionals in a minute.

- Spent too little time rehearsing or, more commonly, no rehearsing. So you spend a few minutes "warming up" then you start shooting. Big novice mistake! Yes, this works In TV land where actors get merely a week (or less) to read, memorize, and rehearse a 50 – 60 page teleplay. But thankfully you don’t work in television (if you do you have my sympathies!).

Actors need time and your sincere attention to construct a character, build a scene, and make a movie you can be proud of. A lot of directors don’t take the time to learn the actual process and so settle for less.

- Refusing to accept criticism from professionals. If you’re still reading you probably don’t have this problem, but those who do never learn much about the process of directing quality work.

Even successful professionals need to keep an open ear to new information and guideposts. In Hollywood it is often that once a director spits out a few blockbusters their ego takes over and they assume every move they make is the best move. Their later work suffers as a result and their career plateaus.

- Accepting worthless criticism from close friends and co-workers. Does your best buddy know how to direct actors? Probably not. Your girlfriend? Not likely. Don’t take everyone’s word as gospel. Good directing tips are few and far between. You can’t just turn to those closest to you for a leg up. Without a friend in the business, the right kind of advice is always hard to find.

- Finding the right tools. When I was first learning to direct and produce I found the directing books out there on the market were not very helpful, filled with too much personal hype of the director’s "glory days" and very little useful information. I wish I had a guide that showed me directing right from wrong. But I had to learn everything about actors the hard way before I could do it the easy way.
